Chapter Thirteen

Reyna knew anyone in her clan would tell her that she had surely lost her mind, but none of her clan had kissed Wulfstan de Gray either.

Reyna could not get it out of her head that she had little to no control over her own actions and reactions to the man. How could she not have known that he would kiss her back? Could it be that she wanted him to kiss her as much as she did? The man was practically a stranger, yet he had her coming undone. He was a wolf, and she was a hawk, and it seemed it would be a dangerous union. Was she willing to take the chance?

He was breaking down all the walls she had carefully built over the years, and she found herself allowing the weakening.

Reyna could not explain it, but she knew she had to stay away from him for her own sake. He was dangerous for her and her clan because he was English, and honestly, she was a bit frightened of his power over her.

Whatever the reason and odd hold he had over her, she decided to help him find his sister and get her away from the cruel baron. Once that was done, she’d return to Berwick and her clan.

It sounded as though the only one who would fight for Tryana was Wulf. And after losing their mother the way they had, she couldn’t help but wish to help the two siblings.

The two mounted and headed back toward York, surprised to find another horse not far down the road, placidly chewing grass. It looked to be one left by the marauders, and she was pleased to see there were no bodies on the ground.

He said, “I know your thoughts. They all could survive most of their injuries.”

She climbed down and mounted the other horse since it was easier for her to move. They moved slower than usual, being ever cognizant of other riders. They did not need any more skirmishes along the way. “My grandsire always said traveling was safer in the morn because the marauders were busy holding their heads from the ale they drank the previous night. I hope it continues this way.”

“Amuse me and tell me about your favorite memories of your clan. Having lived in a small home without many relatives, I’m curious to hear what clan life was like.”

Reyna thought over many of their memorable times. “One of my favorites was over the summer when the water heated up from the sun. We live on the coast of Beauly Firth and while there are mud flats, swimming is best at this one spot where the bottom is nice and sandy. I used to love it when my sire would run in the water carrying me and flinging me off into the deep water. And I also recall my sire doing the same with my mother. That would send me into fits and giggles, especially when Da would race against my uncles with their wives.
